Thousand Languages team

Jacqueline Balderrama heads the Thousand Languages Project, managing its activities and events and managing the student internships and website. She is the current Virginia G. Piper Fellow-in-Residence. She also teaches as a Clinical Assistant Professor at Arizona State University.

Susan Nguyen is the Senior Editor of Hayden's Ferry Review, coordinating the biannual publication of the print journal as well as its web offerings and managing HFR's editors and interns. She is the author of Dear Diaspora.

Alberto Ríos is the Piper Center Director and Professor at Arizona State University as well as Arizona’s inaugural poet laureate and a recent chancellor of the Academy of American Poets. He was among the founders of Hayden's Ferry Review in 1986 and originated the Thousand Languages Project.

Alyssa Elaskari is completing her M.A. in English. She also holds an M.Ed. in TESOL. She is an educator and hosts writing workshops. She is currently an intern at Thousand Languages Project, translating poetry and prose into Arabic and creating special projects and events that connect her local community in Florida to the work being done at ASU. She is a mother, photographer, and baker who loves to help others find joy in reading.

Zoe Soderquist

Zoë Soderquist is a graduating senior majoring in English (Writing, Rhetorics, and Literacies) and Communication. She is a Web/Media Assistant Intern for Thousand Languages. Zoe also works as an Editorial Aide at ASU and as student editor-in-chief for Superstition Review. She hopes to pursue a career in instructional design or technical writing.

Anthony Sha is a junior double majoring in Speech and Hearing Sciences and French. He is interning as a translator for the Thousand Languages Project. Anthony has always been fascinated by foreign languages, particularly the French language, since high school. He hopes that one day he will be able to use the French language in his career.

Grace Hawkins is an undergraduate Translation Intern working in French at the Thousand Languages Project. She is a senior studying English (Linguistics) and French from Gilbert, Arizona.

Michael Mciver is an English Major at ASU and a Japanese translation intern for the Thousand Languages Project. Michael has varied interests, spanning creative writing, translation, and world literature. Upon graduation, he plans on applying to graduate school for an MFA in Creative Writing.

Maya Badman is a strategic communicator based in Phoenix. Currently, she is a senior studying English (Creative Writing) at the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and Public Relations at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University with an expected graduation in May 2024. Maya is a Web and Media Assistant Intern with Thousand Languages and is inspired by their initiative to incorporate projects involving creative literary translation at ASU.

Biaz Nabilla is an MA student in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics. She comes from a multicultural and linguistically diverse country, Indonesia. She is currently an intern at Thousand Languages Project, translating poetry and nonfiction into Bahasa Indonesia. She is also currently working on several projects related to promoting biliteracy and revitalization of local languages in Indonesia, including Dayak to broader audiences, specifically children.

Yaser Alhindi is a curious being about the awe and wonders around him in the universe! Right now he is in his third year in the Innovation in Global Development Phd program at SFIS school. He is a husband and marathoner. He likes reading history, playing chess and learning different languages (currently Spanish). He participated in Co-founding Lingua Lab association club at ASU to learn languages in informal experimental ways. His background is in working and studying the social entrepreneurship field. In his current research work he aims to broaden his understanding, learning and investigation about indigenous knowledge systems and the possible influence in the public sphere in the Arab world.

Carla León Celaya is PhD candidate in Spanish Literature with a specialization in cultural studies and photography. She is currently President of the Honor Society Sigma Delta Pi, which is devoted to students of Spanish at ASU. As a current  intern at TLP, Celaya is focusing on special projects and events that serve the ASU community.

Isabel Haas is a Barrett senior double majoring in Global Studies and Applied Mathematics for the Life and Social Sciences with a minor in Spanish Language Studies. She is translating into Spanish.

Chris Hoshnic is Diné Filmmaker and Poet from Sweetwater, Arizona. He is currently earning his B.A. in English at Arizona State University. In 2013, he graduated with an Associates in Video Production at Glendale Community College. Hoshnic has been a 2022 Emerging Diné Writers’ Institute (EDWI) Fellow, 2023 Screenwriting Fellow with the Native American Media Alliance’s Writers Seminar and is a 2023 Poetry & the Senses Fellow.

Fabian Diaz, hailing from Venezuela, is a senior student at Arizona State University, dedicated to earning a Spanish degree. Fluent in both Spanish and English, Fabian serves as an intern at TLP, specializing in the translation and editing of various literary genres, including nonfiction, fiction, and poetry, from English to Spanish. During his leisure hours, he enjoys hiking, traveling, experimenting with new recipes, and indulging in music.
