Note from the editor:

Thousand Languages Issue 4: Our Roots, Our Wings celebrates seven youth and adult recipients of Hayden’s Ferry Review's (HFR) Indigenous Poets Prize and includes our first Diné translation by Chris Hoshnic. This issue also honors the story, both written and lived, of Ashton Lynn Marie Goodman, whose piece “Reflections in Brass” was originally published posthumously in HFR 50 and is now translated in Japanese by Michael McIver and Spanish by Fabián M Díaz Chacin. The works of this issue are rooted in the heart, family, homeland, and nature, but they also spread their wings in memorializing loss, in resilience, and in calls for justice. We are delighted to reintroduce these original HFR works and share these new translations with you. As this is the final issue on which I will be serving as Supervising Editor, I’d like to express my deepest thanks to the interns, translators, and language reviewers that continue to make this project and these translation issues possible. Thousand Languages has become a dedicated community of students, scholars, and writers around the globe invested in sharing and supporting poetry and stories in their languages and the languages they're learning. Their commitment and creativity are a testament to the value and necessity of translation. —Jacqueline Balderrama (2024)
